Grace Mountain Closure
Posted March 2009

The Government has legally closed all of Grace Mountain with the exception that Seymour Arm Snowmobile Club members will be allowed to ride on little Grace under a permit that is in the clubs name. Signs regarding the closure and caribou information should be going up later this year.  Don Honeychurch sasc President

Hello all SASC members: Linda and I had a meeting with Darcy Monchak, he is in charge of the caribou project. It is a good thing that there is a club in Seymour arm or they would have already put closed signs up at grace. First I want to thank John Rivette,
Wilmer Marks,Linda Talbot who attended meetings
also Pat Grant,Daniela Lasnier and others for their input.
Grace mountain is considered the hub of Caribou country by the science team , and truthfully they may just be going through the motions ,and have full intensions to close it anyway!
We have come to a rough agreement that will not proceed with until I get your approval.

1. most of little grace will be open for sledding
2. there will be a corridor through the lake area up to
    big grace
3. the open sparsely treed area of big grace will be
    open to sledding
4. agree to some kind of permit system to keep our
numbers at current levels, 100 sled trips per
    season
5. club members will help with installing and
    maintaining signs
6. when caribou are seen sledders will leave the
vicinity and report sightings to a club director
    by email or in person

Also if the plan is not approved at government levels they are willing to help with trail building to other areas such as grizzly (fowler) or some other area we would like.

Please reply with your comments ASAP Thanks
Don Honeychurch

Snowmobile Clubs loosing battle

Seymour Arm Snowmobile Club Update Dec 2002
The snowmobile rally December 30th. 1:00pm on the beach.
Our club is now officially registered as a society in BC and our management agreement with the Salmon Arm Forestry Dept. is nearly complete. We have also been talking with the WLAP department about getting J.R.s old trapping cabin to use as a survival cabin and we still have no word on permission to build a shack near Grace Mountain as of Wed.11th.

There was only 6 in. of snow at the 4000 Ft. level toward Crowfoot Mtn. If we get some more snow there will lots of people heading for the hills, check with me, Ron Kure or Wilmer and we might know who is going where and when. Anyone who is interested in joining the club could talk to me or Wilmer.
   Thanks Don Honeychurch donhoney@shaw.ca

June 4 2002

Great News; The B.C. wildlife department WLAP has given us permission to build
a small survival cabin on the high cut block off the #400 road, just below Mount
Grace. It will be nothing to fancy as we and the WLAP do not want to encourage
increased snowmobile activity in the area, because of our close proximity to the
restricted mountain caribou area. The club has permission to build a structure
approx. 20x20 or 400 Sq. Ft.and it will need a raised base of about 8 FT. to keep
it accessible.Hopefully construction will begin this summer,if anyone has any
thoughts or ideas or possibly something to donate please contact me at 403
> 282-6670 or by email.    Don Honeychurch Club President

Land Disposition Take notice that Monashee Powder Adventures Inc., C-11, S-23, Chase, B.C. VOE 1V0 has made an application to Land and Water British Columbia, Inc. (LWBC) Southern Interior and Kootney Service Centre office, for a licence of occupation for commercial recreation purposes covering all that unalienated and unencumbered Crown land lying between Anstey and Perry Rivers, KDYD, and containing 13,327 hectares, more or less, situated on Provincial Crown land. Above info released via The British Columbia Gazette and Eagle Valley News dated May 15 & 17, 2002.

Response from Seymour Arm Snowmobile Club:

Hi Don:   Thank you for your e-mail.   There will be no restrictions on the Perry River or the Gorge road.   Our proposed cat skiing operation is on some of the terrain in-between these roads.   We plan on approaching all of the snowmobile clubs (and the BC snowmobile federation) with further details as our application proceeds.   We currently run a cat skiing operation farther south in the Monashees and have very a very good arrangement with the snowmobile community down there.

I will be in touch this summer.

Yours sincerely,

S.A.S.C.
We had a fairly good turnout at Seymour Arm for the annual pot luck supper and meeting on the weekend of Feb.16-17 thank you Wendy and Don Nelson for hosting after an illness caused a last minute cancellation of the original site. The club still has no news on permission to build a cabin near Grace mountain, keep your fingers crossed. Some bad news is that the B.C.parks department will be burning down J.Rivette's trapping cabin next fall because it is in the new park boundry, by maybe 100 yards, go figure. We may have near record snow cover in the high country, sledding does not get much
better. Hopefully we will be able to flag the trail into Big Grace sometime this winter as it is hard to find the way in especially for those of us that are used to following Ron K. and not paying enough attention as to were we are going. The club has reached 75 members, several others have shown interest in joining so next year it may grow even more depending on what the B.C.S.F. does with there rates etc.

January 31 2002

Hi Guys;
Thought I should update you on club happenings, as of 2002 we have 74 members not bad we even have some Edmontonian's our application to build a warm up shelter is still ongoing, the B.C. government is closeing the Salmon Arm forestry office next year so things may drag on for a while. As usual a lot of sledders will be at Seymour on Feb.15-18 for the annual club ride and pot luck supper, this year it will be at Doug Mclurg's on Saturday night 6:00 P.M. Linda Talbot is organizing it. I just got a bunch of B.C. snowmobile map books for anyone that did not get one, I'll send them out as soon as able.
Most of the logging is shut down except seawards so try and avoid ridding on the 1100 road, the north fork the gorge road
and the 1100 past 26k are unplowed and good for sledding. We still have a few 5$ lottery tickets left. Also anyone ridding on trails please try to avoid spinning your track as this creates moguls and we don't have enough money for a trail groomer that Gary M. can operate. If you have any comments or concerns please contact me!

November 12 2001

The snowmobile season has started early this year, Ron K. and the 2 Jays were up on Grace Mountain
on Sunday Nov.11 and report better snow conditions than last Christmas. They unloaded about 4 KM. up the
#800 road and were in snow all the way to the top of Grace. There is about 6 feet of snow at the top and a good
base as well. As you may be aware the snowmobile club is dealing with the Salmon Arm forestry office to get
permission to build a survival/warm-up cabin on the high cut block below Grace Mountain, and things are looking
good so far. If we get the O/K the club will be looking for donated materials to help build.
See you at Christmas.

March 24th: The snowmobile club has made several trips from Seymour Arm this winter, hitting a few white out conditions, but on Thursday last week when 8-9 sleds ventured to the top of Grace Mountain, Lesley reported not a cloud in the sky and 360 degree view for 100 miles with fantastic snow conditions. When is it Dad's turn?
